Frankincense is similar to Olibanum, but is usually differentiated from it by a distinct lemon aroma, as opposed to the Olibanum's orange aroma. Frankincense is called for in many ancient and medieval recipes, and is the most commonly found ingredient in incense blends. The Kohl substance that ancient Egyptian women used to darken the area around the eyes with was made of charred Frankincense or Olibanum sometimes mixed with other resins and herbs.

Frankincense is a bitter, strong smelling and warming herb with nervine, antiseptic, expectorant and decongestant properties. Frankincense is stimulant, but seldom used now internally, though formerly was in great repute . Pliny mentions it as an antidote to hemlock. Avicenna (tenth century) recommends it for tumors, ulcers, vomiting, dysentery and fevers. In China it is used for leprosy.

  1. Great for depression 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Oct 2015

I can't compare this frankincense to any other, as it's the first time I've ever used frankincense. But I can tell you that I love this stuff! It has a light, lemony smell at first, and then a sweeter smell as it caramelizes. Instead of burning it, I do something that makes it last longer. I take a tealight candle out of its aluminum holder. I then put a little frankincense in. Not a lot- just enough to cover about half of the bottom. Then I put the dish into a potpourri warmer. In about 10 minutes, my bedroom smells lovely, and the frankincense continues to release scent for 1 to 2 hours. I have clinical depression and it disappears within minutes every single time I use the frankincense this way. FYI it also smells good with just about any other incense. I usually break up an incense stick and put it in the dish to warm with my frankincense.

  2. Reminds typical liturgical incense 4 Star Review

This incense reminds me the typical liturgical incense with hints of vanilla.

Although this is one that I like most from the sample, I might prefer the sweet Arabia

  3. My Current Favorite 5 Star Review

Out of the resins in the Frankincense sampler pack, this one was my favorite. It made me smile all over. Bold scent, quite solar. Definitely one to use if you want this for solar rites.
