Daphne, a wild virgin huntress, was the daughter of the river-god Ladon. One day she caught Apollo's eye. He gave chase to her, and she fled far and fast but she could not out-run the swift God. As Apollo was almost upon her, she prayed in desperation to Zeus to save her. She was then metamorphosed into a Laurel tree. Apollo clutched the tree in passionate frustration, and finally contented himself with the leaves from the Laurel tree, which became his cult plant. As a reward from Apollo victors who were triumphant in contests were often given Laurel leaves to wear as crowns.
