Athena is the great warrior Goddess of the Greek pantheon and protectress of the City of Athens. Originally a Goddess of the Hilltops and Protector of Kings, Athena came to represent ideas of justice and purity in the face of adversity and iniquity.
Athena has no mother. To avoid a prophecy that his child would overthrow him, Zeus swallowed his pregnant wife Metis ("cunning intelligence"). Soon after Zeus was afflicted with a terrible headache, and out of his head burst Athena, fully grown and armed for battle. In a sense, Athena can be seen as a reincarnation of the Goddess Metis.
One of Athena's famous symbols, like Lilith and Hecate, is the night Owl which symbolizes her wisdom. She is extremely adept in the Art of Strategy and War, helping many heroes in the Greek Myths to overcome their adversaries. Athena uses skill, planning and strategy to achieve victory, rather than the emotional blood-lust and raw brute force of Ares.
Athena is often pictured with her spear, crested Athenian helmet (showing her connection to royalty and horses), and often she has the image of Medusa on her breastplate or shield, which again shows her power to overcome the terror of raw emotion and fear. She is also sometimes shown with Nike, the Goddess of Victory standing in the palm of her hand. To the Romans she was known as Minerva.
