Bacchus is a cult title of the Greek God Dionysus. The Romans called him mainly by the name Bacchus (from the Greek "bakcheia", "ecstatic liberation") to emphasize the Liberation of care and anxiety brought on by drunken revelry.
Dionysus is the God of Wine, Ecstasy and Mystic Liberation. Called "twice-born", Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele (the Moon). He was snatched prematurely from his dying mother's womb, and carried to term in the thigh of Zeus, which is where he was born from. His wife is Ariadne.
Dionysus is perceived to be both man and animal, male and effeminate, young and old. He has provenance over wine and intoxication, mania and the ecstasy of madness, the mask of the persona and impersonation, and the mysterious realm of the dead with an eye towards an ecstatic afterlife. He is both the creator of wine, and the very wine itself as it is being poured.
