Eros (Roman Cupid), the son of Ares and Aphrodite, represents the violent physical desire of love. He affects both the mind and the body, almost to the point of possession. For this reason he is not always pictured in a positive light, for the love-struck individual can suffer unimaginable cruelty and rejection by the beloved. Eros is pictured as playful, but also full of frenzy and confusion.
Eros is a constant companion of Aphrodite, along with Himeros (Desire) and Pothos (Longing). He is often pictured as a young male, sometimes with wings, a bow and quiver of arrows.
