Roses have been praised since Ancient times for a variety of uses. The Romans especially appreciated them, and they adorned statues of Cupid, Venus and Bacchus with garlands of Roses. They were strewn at celebrations upon seats and floors, and in the streets under processions and parades. The Rose represented beauty and pleasure, and Sappho calls the Rose the 'Queen of Flowers'.
