Makko Powder

Makko Powder
(machillus thunbergii)
Origin: Japan
Form: Powder
Other names: Tabu no ki
Uses: Incense making and Eastern incense ceremonies
Associations: none
Aroma: little to no aroma, just a subtle wood background

Makko is a traditional ingredient in Japanese incense making. Makko means "incense powder" and comes from the bark of an evergreen tree that grows in Southeast Asia, the Machillus Thunbergii tree. Often Makko is used as a base to smolder incense ingredients over, rather than using charcoal. Makko also acts as a water-soluble adhesive for use in incense stick and cone making, where it burns evenly, increases burn time and is almost completely odorless.
