Set or Seth (Egyptian Setekh, Sutekh, or Setesh) is a complicated and mysterious God in Ancient Egypt. Argument rages over what type of animal is used to represent him. Many (like the Greeks) believe he is an Ass or Donkey, while others believe Set is a certain type of saiga antelope or perhaps an ant-eater.
Set embodies the necessary destructive and chaotic forces in nature. He was feared by many in Egypt because of this, but others realized his powerful importance and worshipped him.
Set was born from his mother Nut (Nuit), and in one account he savagely rips himself from her womb. Set holds special prominence with the great sun god Ra who gives him honor because it is only Set who can destroy the terrible snake Apophis in the Underworld which threatens Ra when he is at his weakest point each day.
High quality hand-painted cold-cast bronze statue. 8.5 inches tall, 2.25 inches wide and 3.25 inches deep. |
