The Greek Silenus is the son of Hermes and father of all Satyrs. He is foremost among the woodland spirits and can be exceptionally wise and gentle, or mischievous and full of desire. Silenus became the foster father and educator of Dionysus. Here the infant god is cuddled and cared for by his sturdy forest guardian, who in later life was present when Dionysus wed Ariadne.
Original in the Vatican Museum. Cast in antique stone colored Gypsum-stone. 10 inches tall, 4 inches wide. |
