Alkanet has been used by French women as a temporary make-up solution. Many cultures use the root as a dye which is then utilized in decorations and staining procedures. Not recommended for internal use. Alkanet root is also used for dying wood, fabrics, and the like. The whole root of is ground and then mixed with other products or oils to color them. It is also used in soaps and lotions. It has traditionally been used for ulcers, hot inflammations, burns, yellow jaundice, spleen, and gravel in the kidneys. It is expectorant, diuretic, astringent, purgative, blood tonic, and demulcent.
