Asafoetida is one of those acquired smells that you either love or hate. Many think that it is awful the first time one smells it, but it has underlying tones that will grow on you in peculiar ways. This Asafoetida is the very pure and clean smelling. This Asafoetida Powder comes from India.
Asafoetida is a common ingredient in Indian and Middle-Eastern cooking. This raw Asafoetida is herb grade and safe for cooking.

It is the medicine given to me by my mother and grand mother, many, many years ago for stomach discomforts and other ailments as a child in the South, a few drops in a teaspoon of sugar, it was soaked in a small container of gin and never went bad. I remember it so well

I just figured out a good way to store hing so that it doesn't smell. Wrap it in a couple of layers of foil, sealing the foil, and put that in a Tupperware, and put it in the freezer. The cold temperature gretly reduces the chemical activity and it doesn't smell any more. However, it freezes really solid, so you may want to cut it in small pieces BEFORE freezing so that you can just pull a piece out quickly and not have to saw at it.

So, I am totally new to asafetida, or 'hing,' as I have gotten used to the Indian name for it. The Soma Luna hing is raw and fresh and very potent. It's amazing! You may read things about the smell, and it does change when cooked, but even when raw, it's not bad--and I've gotten used to it and even like it now. You can warm it with other spices in oil before adding it to food, or you can put it in the water you are cooking the food in. Don't eat it directly raw--it burns, like raw garlic does.

This is the real deal. I put it in a small mason jar and you can smell it through the lid. Keep it away from your other herbs.

I'm so glad I purchased this. The flavor is so rich and unique and you only need to use a small amount. You definetly get your money's worth. I also received it soon after ordering. I'm pleased to have this new flavor in my kitchen. I'll definetly buy again.

Somas asafoetida gum is by far the best I have ever used. The service of the company was excellent as well.
