This wonderful incense resin is a close relative of Myrrh, but smells quite different. Because of this it is also called Sweet Myrrh. The Greek name Bdellium is pronounced DEL-ee-um. It is also called Gum Guggul in India (Gugul, Guggulu etc.) and Bedolach in Hebrew. While the current Botanical name is Commiphora mukul, you will also find the synonyms Commiphora gugul, Balsamodendron mukul. In Africa you will find it as the name Commiphora wightii or Commiphora africana. Bdellium is attributed to the planet Mars and the element of Fire for good reason. Unlike the watery latex aroma of Myrrh, Gum Guggul is more sweet, more forceful with an almost masculine, pepper-like aroma which contributes to an overall smooth but powerful presence.

Gum Guggul has a long historical use as a medicinal herb. It is highly revered in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is said to lower cholesterol, which studies have shown to be true. It grows wild in the semi-arid states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka in India.
