Frankincense is similar to Olibanum, but is usually differentiated from it by a distinct lemon aroma, as opposed to the Olibanum's orange aroma. Frankincense is called for in many ancient and medieval recipes, and is the most commonly found ingredient in incense blends. The Kohl substance that ancient Egyptian women used to darken the area around the eyes with was made of charred Frankincense or Olibanum sometimes mixed with other resins and herbs.
Frankincense is a bitter, strong smelling and warming herb with nervine, antiseptic, expectorant and decongestant properties. Frankincense is stimulant, but seldom used now internally, though formerly was in great repute . Pliny mentions it as an antidote to hemlock. Avicenna (tenth century) recommends it for tumors, ulcers, vomiting, dysentery and fevers. In China it is used for leprosy.
Hougari Frankincense is the highest grade of Frankincense available, second to none. The pieces are very large, and the aroma is simply amazing, changing from very clear lemon to lime in the greener pieces. This Royal Hougari is hand-picked Hougari pieces chosen for their size and color, and is the highest grade of Omani Frankincense possible. This Hougari Frankincense comes directly from Oman, the birthplace of Frankincense. For information on the difference between Frankincense and Olibanum please see our Frankincense v.s. Olibanum page.

I have not experienced such wonderful Frankencense as this before. Long smoulder and easy size to work with.

Apparently this is the second to the highest strain of frankincense available anywhere in the world , with royal green ( as opposed to simply "royal" ) being the highest.
I have tried both , and I think I actually like this one better. Both have that hint of eucalyptus that I previously thought was exclusive to the royal green, but it's a bit more subdued in this variety , combined with a vanilla like scent.... . This variety is also more pliable or gelatinous than the royal green.
Does anybody know if this grade of resin is one of the edible varieties of frankincense ?
