Product Description

Granny Chantrell's German Tomato Seeds

Solanum lycopersicum

Grown on Ophidian Farms - always organic!

This meaty, beefsteak-type pink-red tomato is named after Lettie Cantrell, who received seeds from a soldier returning from Germany during World War II.  She grew this tomato in the hills of eastern Kentucky for many years.  This was her favorite tomato and the only one she grew.  Each year she saved seeds from the largest tomatoes, some of which reached 2 1/2 lbs. Our growers find it to be quite productive.  Lettie died in January 2006, at the age of 96.  Her tomato was voted best flavor at the 2010 Monticello Tomato Tasting.  Large beefsteak, 1+ lb, tasty fruit on large, vigorous plants.  Indeterminate - will grow and produce fruit until killed by frost.  Open pollinated Heirloom tomato seeds.

Botanical Names: Solanum lycopersicum
Family: Solanaceae
Common Names: Tomato
Life Cycle: Annual
Plant Type: Herbaceous upright vine (needs support)

Requirements: Tomatoes are easy to grow.  Sow seeds in desired medium 6-8 weeks prior to transplanting. Maintain a constant 80-90°F (27-32°C) soil temperature. Cover trays with plastic to hold in moisture and increase germination rates.  hen first true leaves just show, transplant the seedlings into cell-type containers or blocks. 2" or larger containers will produce larger, stronger root systems; 4" blocks are the standard. Grow plants at a constant 66-68°F (19-20°C) day and night temperature. After cotyledon leaves have expanded, fertilize with a complete nutrient solution (EC 1.0, pH 5.8) or equivalent as needed to keep plants dark green and healthy; increase EC as plants grow. When transplanting into the greenhouse, maintain 73-77°F (23-25°C) day and night temperature for a few days after transplanting to promote rapid vegetative growth and root establishment. Once fruit begins to set, lower night temperature to 62-66°F (17-19°C) and keep a daytime temperature of 68-72°F (20-22°C).
